  • Ethiopia Bunna Sack Nebojša Vučićević, Appoints Gezaghen Ketema as Interim Coach

Ethiopian Premier League club Ethiopia Bunna have sacked Serbian manager Nebojša Vučićević after a dreadful start of the season.

The club confirmed the news on their official Facebook page by noting further details will be communicated in the coming days regarding Vučićević’s dismissal.

Assistant trainer Gezaghen Ketema assumed the coaching role as former club captain Edelu Dereje become assistant coach.

It has been a rocky road for the former Partizan Belgrade attacker Vučićević. His Ethiopia Bunna side managed to win only two ties out of the 9 league encounters. The trainer saw his side losing an away game against newly promoted side Woldia SC last Friday just days after beating arch rivals Kidus Giorgis in Sheger Derby. A series of unimpressive results are believed to trigger the Serbs dismissal.

  • Liverpool's player Steven Gerrard retires

"I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career," said Gerrard.

"I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.

"As a teenager I fulfilled my childhood dream by pulling on the famous red shirt of Liverpool, and when I made my debut against Blackburn Rovers in November 1998 I could never have imagined what would then follow over the next 18 years."

Midfielder Gerrard was made Liverpool captain by Gerard Houllier in 2003 and led the side to the Champions League title in 2005, scoring the Reds' first goal as they recovered from being 3-0 down at half-time to beat Italian giants AC Milan on penalties in the Istanbul final.

"At an international level, I feel privileged to have won 114 England caps and to have had the honour of captaining my country. I will always look back with great pride at every time I pulled on the England shirt."

While the Champions League success is surely the highlight of Gerrard's Liverpool career, he also helped his boyhood club win two FA Cups, three League Cups, a Uefa Cup and a Uefa Super Cup.

"I was lucky to play alongside some great players and under some fantastic managers during my time at Anfield and would like to thank each and every one of them, as well as all of the backroom staff at the club throughout my time there for the fantastic support they showed me," he added.

  • Lionel Messi sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud

Under Spanish law any sentence under two years can be suspended meaning the Barcelona and Argentina footballer is expected to avoid serving time in prison

Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud by a Spanish court.

Under Spanish law any sentence under two years can be suspended meaning the Barcelona and Argentina footballer is expected to avoid serving time in prison.

The 29-year-old, among the world’s highest-earning athletes, was accused of creating a string of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid taxation on €4.16m (£3.2m) of image rights earnings between 2007 and 2009.

Messi, who took time out from Argentina’s preparations for the Copa America tournament this summer, said in court last month: “I was playing football; I had no idea about anything. I trusted my dad and my lawyers.”

The Argentinian’s father Jorge Horacio Messi has also been handed the same punishment. The pair, who also face huge fines, can appeal their sentences through the Supreme Court.

During the trial, Messi said he never suspected any wrongdoing when his father would ask him to sign contracts or documents relating to his image rights, a lucrative source of income for any athlete of his calibre.

Witness Eva Blazquez, responsible for handling the four-time Champions League winner’s tax declarations, said: “Leo didn't see them. The final supervision was done by the client, in this case, Jorge Messi.”

Messi's father reiterated last month that his son didn't know the details of his contracts. “I didn't think it was necessary to inform him of everything,” he said

Sadio Mane nears Liverpool move plus the latest from Arsenal and Manchester United

News of a managerial appointment in Spain next, where former Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli has landed the Sevilla job.

The 56-year-old has been out of work since he stepped down as Chile coach in January, six months after leading them to their first Copa America title.

He has signed a four-year deal with the Spanish side, as he takes over from Paris Saint-Germain-bound Unai Emery.

Sevilla finished seventh in La Liga last season, but have qualified for the Champions League after they beat Liverpool in the Europa League final.

Sampaoli is one of the most respected coaches in the game - and a bone fide hipster to boot.

Alves move bad news for Arsenal?

Dani Alves’ move from Barcelona to Juventus could indirectly affect Arsenal - with the Catalans identifying Hector Bellerin as a replacement.

That is according to the London Evening Standard, who say the Nou Camp outfit are keen for Bellerin to return after graduating from the club’s academy.

Alves has filled the right-back role for eight years at Barca, and they may now be forced to scour the transfer market for a long-term replacement.

Bellerin has three years remaining on his contract at the Emirates and was rewarded for his fine form with a call-up to Spain’s Euro 2016 squad.

    No-go for Mexico man?

Mexico midfielder Hector Herrera could be ready to snub Liverpool in favour of a move to Napoli.

The Porto playmaker has been earmarked as a potential target by the Reds, but their inability to offer European football may send him to the Serie A side instead.

Napoli will play in the Champions League after finishing runners-up to Juventus in Italy last season, while the Reds finished eighth in the Premier League.

Italian outlet Fantagazzetta say that could be a deal breaker in their move for Herrera.

Koeman eyes Stekelenburg reunion at Everton

Ronald Koeman wants Maarten Stekelenburg to become his new No.1 at Everton.

Koeman needs a goalkeeper to replace Tim Howard and was impressed by Stekelenburg when he deputised for Fraser Forster under him at Southampton during the first half of last season.

Fulham are keen to get Stekelenburg, who has one year left on his contract, off their wage bill and will accept a knockdown fee of £750,000 for the Dutch World Cup final keeper.

Stekelenburg, 33, is desperate to remain in the Premier League after his spell with Saints and does not want to play in the Championship with Fulham.

United confident of landing Dortmund's Mkhitaryan

Manchester United are confident of landing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for a fee of around £26million.

Armenia international Mkhitaryan is set to become new United boss Jose Mourinho’ssecond signing, following the £30m capture of Villarreal defender Eric Bailly.

Dortmund have insisted Mkhitaryan is not for sale, but after rejectingUnited’sopening offer of £19m, they look set to accept the improved bid for a player with only one year left on his contract.

Having already lost Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich and with star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in demand from Europe’s top clubs, Dortmund were reluctant to wave goodbye to another key man this summer.

But with Mkhitaryan entering the final year of his deal, Dortmund simply cannot turn down such a lucrative offer, with United having effectively forced their hand with their enhanced bid.
